Borstvoeding is goed voor de moeder omdat het de kans op bloedingen bij de placenta vermindert, de moeder de kans geeft om uit te rusten en de baarmoeder stimuleert om samen te trekken, zodat deze weer de omvang van voor de zwangerschap krijgt. De kwaliteit van moedermelk is echter sterk afhankelijk van het dieet van de moeder.
